Kung Pao Chicken (Frango Xadrez): Juicy, Easy Traditional Chinese Recipe in 20 Minutes

Kung Pao Chicken (Frango Xadrez) is one of the most iconic dishes of Asian cuisine. With a balanced flavor between salty, slightly sweet and the crunch of peanuts, this recipe is perfect for a quick and special lunch.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1.1 lb (500 g) of chicken breast cut into medium cubes
  • 1 red bell pepper and 1 green bell pepper cut into squares
  • 1 large onion cut into cubes
  • 1/2 cup of roasted skinless peanuts
  • 3 tablespoons of soy sauce (shoyu)
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved in 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon of water (100 ml)
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic and ginger to taste

Step-by-Step Preparation

1. Sear the chicken over high heat with a drizzle of oil until golden on the outside and set aside.

2. In the same skillet or wok, sauté the garlic, ginger, onion and bell peppers, keeping them crunchy.

3. Return the chicken to the pan, add the soy sauce and the dissolved cornstarch, stirring until the sauce thickens and turns glossy.

4. Finish by mixing in the roasted peanuts and serve immediately alongside our traditional Arroz con Gandules or with recipes from our special meats section.
